Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Engineering

Engineering powers the world around us. Engineers provide innovative solutions through technological advances that are integral to our day-to-day lives. Smart technology can transform lives for the better and generate economic success. Engineers are sought after across industry sectors for their multi-disciplinary knowledge and dynamic approach to projects and problem solving. Engineers have highly developed knowledge and skills from conceptual design through to build and application along with the know-how to refine and perfect the finished product.

The School of Engineering is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, one of the largest technology educators in the UK with over 6,000 students. Our home is the John Dalton building, which is located in the city centre of Manchester. It’s a great place to study engineering, not least because Manchester has a rich engineering heritage – Rolls met Royce here, and more recently, graphene was first discovered – but also because Manchester and the North West are a major hub for innovation and technology and one of the biggest engineering sectors in the UK.

Our degree programmes range from electrical engineering to mechanical and automotive engineering to the newer areas of computer and network technology, product design and design engineering.

Our Electrical and Electronic Engineering division has risen 19 places in The Guardian University Guide 2017 and is now ranked 18th in the UK.

Our specialist engineering facilities are excellent. In the last ten years alone, the Faculty has invested over £50 million in high specification teaching and research laboratories and workshops including a £4million heavy engineering workshop and equipment including 3D printers, rapid prototyping machines and CNC machining technology. Our students work on extra-curricular projects to apply their engineering skills, for example the formula student racing car competition or the engineering for people design challenge.
